On March 12, 2026, a devastating fire broke out at the Ronahi TV station in Qamishlo city. The blaze completely destroyed the main broadcasting studio and the control room (regie); it also ruined most of the essential technical equipment, forcing the channel to temporarily suspend its live broadcasting.
This incident marks a heavy loss for a media institution that has spent years providing professional coverage, reporting events, and covering regional issues, thereby depriving its audience of a prominent media platform that has played a vital role in delivering news, as well as political, social, and cultural programming to all segments of society.
Since its launch on November 21, 2011, Ronahi TV has broadcast in Kurdish, Arabic, English, and Syriac to cover ongoing developments and expand the scope of local media. By establishing offices and branches across various regions, backed by a vast network of correspondents, it played a crucial role in bringing the voice of local communities to public opinion.
Driven by our responsibility toward free media institutions and out of our firm belief in the importance of sustaining their mission, we, the “Free Media Association” (YRA), announce the launch of the “Support Ronahi TV” campaign. This campaign aims to support the reconstruction of the channel and assist in securing the technical equipment destroyed by the fire—including cameras, editing suites, audiovisual control systems, computers, and all core infrastructure required to rebuild the studios and resume normal broadcasting.
The “Support Ronahi TV” initiative confirms that protecting free media and ensuring its continuity is a collective responsibility. Standing with such media institutions facing disasters or targeting is a fundamental defense of society’s right to information and the preservation of professional journalism.
We call upon media institutions, organizations, supporting entities, initiative-takers, and all who believe in press freedom to contribute to this campaign, each according to their capacity, to support the efforts to rebuild the channel’s technical infrastructure and empower it to resume its media mission as soon as possible.
The mechanisms for receiving donations and ways to participate in the campaign—with full commitment to transparency in managing and directing resources toward restoring the channel’s technical readiness—will be detailed in the appendix attached to this statement.
